7 Steps to Commissioning Your Perfect Portrait - This is a blog post I wrote that will help you make some decisions about your artwork. It's geared toward portraits, but much of the information can pertain to illustration as well.

What to Expect When Working With Me - And here's some information about what to expect throughout the process.

INFORMATION REQUIRED TO PROVIDE AN ACCURATE QUOTE

  • What size will your final publication be? The larger the print, the more detail that will be required.

  • How many illustrations will you need? Volume pricing may be available for more than one illustration.

  • If this is for a book, how many pages will your book be?

  • How many of each size of illustration will you need?

  • What will the final usage be? Is this art needed for your publication only or will it be printed on other objects like posters or t-shirts?

  • In what artistic style would you like your artwork done? Do you want a more cartoon-like look or something closer to realism?

  • How will we be getting your artwork to you? Shipping and delivery will incur a fee, but you may pick your art up from my studio near Denton, Texas for free. Electronic delivery of scanned or digital artwork is provided for free.

  • What kind of licensing term are you needing? Standard terms are for one year.

  • Would you like hand-painted/drawn illustrations or digital art? If hand-painted/drawn, what medium would you prefer? I work in pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink/markers, watercolor, acrylic and oil.

  • Do you have a deadline for your artwork? Rush fees may be assessed if artwork is needed quickly.

  • Will you need artwork only or would you like for me to do the layout and design as well?

  • What is your geographical area of distribution? No additional fees are required for US-only distribution.

  • For books, do you have a publisher or will you be self-publishing?

  • For children's books, do you have a following or will this be your first publication?

  • What kind of budget do you have in mind? Knowing this ahead of time can help me to determine what options may be available to you.

THE PROCESS

  1. The initial consultation is free. We can discuss your project over the phone, through e-mail or preferably, in person. In order to provide you with an accurate quote, I will need the information described above. I may do a some very basic sketches or digital mockups to determine the intricacy of your desired style.

  2. Once I have a clear understanding of the above, I will send a Proposal that includes pricing and other information.

  3. If extensive designs are necessary, I may include a Non-Disclosure Agreement that must be signed and returned to me prior to commencement of the design work.

  4. I will then send an Invoice for your 50% deposit. Payment options are listed on the invoice. Deposit payment must be received before commencement of the design work.

  5. With the Invoice, I will send a Contract that outlines all financial and legal details surround the transaction. This Contract must be returned signed (an electronic signature request will be sent) before commencement of the design work.

  6. After receipt of the signed NDA, signed contract and deposit, I will provide basic drawings/designs, if necessary.

  7. When we've agreed on a final design, I will begin finalizing the artwork.

  8. Throughout the process, I will share progress photos with you to ensure that the project is headed in the right direction.

  9. Once complete, an invoice for the remaining 50% will be sent. If your items are to be shipped, these costs will be included on your invoice. If you prefer for me to deliver the item, a delivery fee will be included on your invoice.

  10. When the final payment is received, I will provide you with a receipt.

  11. In many cases, I will record a time lapse video of my work and post it on YouTube. If I am able to do this for your project, I will send you the link.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS THAT MAY AFFECT YOUR QUOTE

  • Rates include up to 3 revisions of each illustration. Additional revisions are available at a rate of $50/hour.

  • Design modifications or additions made after the design has been accepted and work begun, may incur additional fees, depending on the scope of the changes.
